Key take away

Clinicians should prioritize the mental well-being of both chronically ill children and their caretakers. Furthermore, they should consider implementing caregiver engagement therapies to effectively address depression and anxiety that arise from managing the child's chronic health condition.

Background

This study was carried out to assess the efficacy of caregiver engagement interventions in minimizing depression and anxiety of children suffering from chronic health conditions and their caregivers.

Method

To conduct this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, an extensive search was carried out across various databases, including Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycArticles, PubMed, Web of Science, APA, Ovid, and PsycINFO.

Result

The findings, based on the inclusion of twenty-nine studies, indicated that caregiver engagement interventions considerably decrease anxiety (standardized mean difference [SMD] = -0.49) and depression (SMD = -0.37) among caregivers, particularly in developing countries. But, no notable improvements were witnessed in anxiety (SMD = 0.00) and depression (SMD = -0.14) levels of the children.

When designing strategies for families with pediatric patients in developing countries, it is crucial to involve and engage caregivers. This is particularly crucial for children having chronic conditions as they transfer to adult care services. Emphasizing support for self-management is of utmost significance in such cases.

Conclusion

Hence, there is significant evidence supporting the positive effects of caregiver engagement interventions on minimizing anxiety and depression among caregivers. It is recommended that future research should focus on developing engagement interventions aimed at alleviating anxiety and depression particularly in children having chronic health conditions.
