Key take away

Standardized hypnotic message is easy to use, comfortable and relieves pain, discomfort and anxiety linked with the application of at least a single capsaicin patch in cancer patients

Background

Some people suffer a sharp burning sensation at application and removal of the C. This study investigated the effect of playing a standardized hypnosis recording on the anxiety and pain associated with the use of capsaicin patch.

Method

The numerical rating scales were used to evaluate the advantages of the intervention used on pain and anxiety. All the patients had an application of the capsaicin patch, comprising the likelihood for the patient to use a cold patch. Sixty-nine patients were assigned arbitrarily into three groups depending on the type of intervention used during capsaicin patch application. i.e. “Hypnosis group where a standardized hypnotic message was played, or the “Music group” where soothing music was played and the “Standard group” (no intervention).

Result

No profound difference in pain scores between groups was reported. Anxiety was considerably lower in the hypnosis group than the standard application following the application. No significant difference amongst the standard group and music group, or between the hypnosis group and music group was found.

Conclusion

Listening to a standardized hypnotic message during capsaicin patch application can significantly lower anxiety and discomfort.
