Key take away

Both individually and in collaboration, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and general practitioners can enhance the way that patients with allergic diseases are managed. Interaction between patients and healthcare providers can make sure that those with allergies receive the best possible care.

Background

Guidelines to manage people with allergic conditions are available. However, the added value of nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and general practitioners to treat allergic diseases, has not been completely clarified. The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) appointed a task force to investigate this issue.

This study aimed to determine the added value of nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and general practitioners in the management of allergic diseases, in an integrated model of care.

Method

Using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and CINAHL databases, a search of peer-reviewed articles on the management of allergic illnesses was conducted.

Result

If healthcare providers work together to diagnose and treat patients with allergies, supportive models of care can be developed. Working with multidisciplinary teams can improve quality of life by enhancing patient understanding of the disease, adherence to therapy, and self-care skills.

In an environment of mutual respect and shared values, as well as when patients are involved in the planning of care, the multidisciplinary teams competences and processes can be strengthened and improved. An efficient integrated model of care for individuals with allergic disorders can be developed by healthcare providers through patient-centered communication and a focus on the added value of each profession.

Conclusion

Nurses, allied healthcare professionals, and general practitioners play a crucial role to deliver integrated care, whereby the medical care system and social environment join forces to boost the quality of facilities, and ultimately the lives of individuals suffering from allergic disease.
