Key take away

Photobiomodulation significantly reduces the treatment time during dental alignment and thus should be preferred for use in routine clinical practice.

Background

In the present study, the researchers estimated the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBM) in improving the efficiency of dental (orthodontic) treatment with the fixed appliance at the time of alignment.

Method

In this study, 89 patients were randomly assigned to receive treatment either with the fixed appliance and PMB (treatment group) or with fixed appliance only (control group). The criteria for inclusion in the study were patients aged between 13 and 30 years with permanent dentition, class 1 malocclusion, no spaces in the lower arch, lower 6–6 mild crowding measured on the dental cast, non-extractive treatment plan, no ectopic teeth and no orthodontic treatment in the past. ATP38 was used to administer PBM every 14 days. Visual inspection was carried out to estimate the dental alignment. The time of the treatment was defined as the date of estimation of complete dental alignment to the date of brackets bonding. The listing of the number of monthly scheduled appointments was also carried out. The statistical analysis was carried out for the intergroup comparison.

Result

In the PBM group, the time of the treatment was considerably shorter than the control group (203 days vs 260 days). Compared to the control group, the control groups were lesser in the PBM group.

Conclusion

The results from the present study suggest PBM to be a useful option for increasing the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment at the time of mandibular decrowding.
