Back pain is a one of complication during pregnancy which originate a significant impact on health related quality of life. To date, there is paucity of data regarding the prevalence of this problem in Malaysia. Hence this study determine the prevelance and reported the higher visual analoque scale (VAS) score and Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (ODQ).

To examine the back pain prevalence during pregnancy, risk factors and its influence on the pregnant women' quality of life.

A total of 358 pregnant females who visited the antenatal clinic in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre from October 2011 until April 2012 were selected for the analysis. Back pain among females was classified into two parts; posterior pelvic pain and lumbar pain. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (ODQ) were used to measure back pain severity and functional limitation. 

The back pain prevalence noticed during pregnancy was 84.6%. The previous history of back pain and occupation were correlated with back pain in pregnancy. Total ODQ score was statistically significantly associated with severity of pain in the terms of functional limitation disability. Social life, personal care, sex life, sitting, and standing were significantly affected.

The type of occupation and history of back pain were the risk factors for back pain during pregnancy. The larger the VAS score, the higher the ODQ will be affected.
