Vonoprazan-containing antibiotic treatment can effectively eradicate H. pylori and is capable of attaining 100% efficacy in people treated for the first time (first-line treatment) and 91% effectiveness in people having prior failed elimination, says an exploratory study published in Helicobacter.

Researchers undertook this single-center clinical review for reporting the safety and efficacy of vonoprazan-containing antibiotic combination therapies to eliminate H. pylori in patients (age 18 years or above) and who were positive for H. pylori on Urea Breath Test, and/or histopathology.

Participants underwent a ten-day therapy of a combination of antibiotics and vonoprazan. Overall, 11 different combinations of antibiotics that included two to five different antibiotics, primarily furazolidone, levofloxacin, amoxicillin, tetracycline, rifabutin, and nitazoxanide were incorporated.

The H. pylori eradication success was based on negative Urea Breath Test findings and/or histopathology outcomes after the therapy. The descriptive statistics were summarized. During the analysis, 153 H.pylori-infected people (74 females) were treated with antibiotic plus vonoprazan therapy. About 31% (48/153) of people had previously failed a proton pump inhibitor-based H. pylori therapy. The follow-up was available for 43% (66/153) of patients.

The overall elimination attained in participants who completed the follow-up,  the subgroup of participants treated for the first time, those participants who had failed prior, non-vonoprazan-containing treatment is illustrated in Table 1:

Subsequent research using a factorial design will be required for optimizing each regimen as most of the regimens consisted of more than 2 antibiotics.
