What's new?

Oral vitamin D3 supplementation improves symptoms and is beneficial for the management of allergic rhinitis.

In a prospective clinical study, four weeks of oral vitamin D3 supplementation as an adjunct to standard therapy (intranasal steroid spray) led to a considerable decrease in symptoms score in people diagnosed with allergic rhinitis. Investigators sought to investigate the efficacy of oral vitamin D3 supplementation as an adjunct to standard therapy in 80 people with allergic rhinitis.

Participants were randomly segregated into two groups: (i) Study group: Given oral vitamin D3 (60,000 IU) along with intranasal steroid spray, and (ii) Control group: Given only intranasal steroid spray for four weeks. By evaluating the total nasal symptom score (TNSS), the response in both groups was compared.

Allergic rhinitis people illustrated deficiency in vitamin D as illustrated by mean serum vitamin D levels. The pre-treatment and post-treatment mean TNSS score in the study group and the control group, is shown in Table 1:

Following four weeks of oral vitamin D3 supplementation, a substantial drop in symptoms score was noted. A noteworthy difference was noted between the study and control groups. Thus, oral vitamin D3 supplementation is valuable to mitigate allergic rhinitis symptoms.
