What's new?

The use of topical ozone therapy is beneficial to alleviate pain and swelling after the transalveolar dental extraction procedure.

A prospective randomized controlled trial conducted on 72 patients scheduled to undergo surgical extractions depicted that ozone therapy, an efficacious topical agent, can be utilized as a treatment modality to accelerate healing and mitigate pain without the need for excess medications. Researchers aimed to determine the efficacy of ozone therapy for wound healing in 72 people who underwent transalveolar extractions.

Participants were randomly segregated into either the ozone group (n=36) or the control group (n=36). Following the procedure, ozonated oil was given to the ozone group and normal saline irrigation was given to the control group. In the ozone group, ozonated oil was locally applied at the extraction site for three times daily for five days. Antibiotics were only administered to the control group.

Analgesics were administered for five days in the control group and on SOS (Si Opus Sit' which means 'if needed') basis in the ozone group. Participants were assessed for postsurgery swelling, wound healing, and pain on postoperative day 3 (POD3) and postoperative day 7 (POD7). On the 7th day, a recording was done of the final postoperative symptom severity (POSSE) score and the number of analgesics taken. In comparison with the control group, the ozone group exhibited improved wound healing on the third and seventh day.

A clinically meaningful reduction in the number of analgesics, visual analogue scale (VAS) pain, and swelling scores was noted in the ozone group vs. the control group. In comparison with the control group, the ozone group exhibited a remarkable reduction in post-extraction discomfort. Thus, topical ozone therapy is a potential healing agent for post transalveolar dental extractions and may prove to be a viable substitute to postoperative analgesics and antibiotics, eradicating any systemic adverse effects linked with these.
