A 12-week supplementation with synbiotics can improve the emotional health status, weight, body hair, infertility, and general physical health status of females suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome.

In a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial, researchers revealed promising results regarding the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study, conducted over twelve weeks with 56 women diagnosed with PCOS, focused on assessing the impact of synbiotics – a combination of probiotics and prebiotics – on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Volunteers were randomly assigned to get either a daily 2-gram synbiotic sachet or a placebo.

The synbiotic sachets contained a blend of fructooligosaccharide, Lactobacillus helveticus, Bacillus coagulans (GBI-30), and Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The study measured various aspects of HRQoL utilizing validated questionnaires, including the 26-Item Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (PCOSQ-26), the 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), both before and after the intervention.

Results from the analysis of 52 volunteers who completed the trial revealed remarkable improvements in several domains of the PCOSQ-26 questionnaire among those who received synbiotic supplementation. Specifically, emotional well-being, body hair management, weight management, and infertility concerns all showed remarkable enhancements when compared to the placebo group. Furthermore, the physical health score within the SF-12 questionnaire also exhibited a notable improvement among those taking synbiotics.

However, the study did not find a considerable improvement in the PSS-10 scores at the end of the trial. This study shed light on the potential of synbiotics containing GBI-30, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and fructooligosaccharide in boosting the quality of life for PCOS sufferers. These results underscore the significance of gut health in tackling the symptoms associated with this ailment.
