A recent study illustrated the potential of Sodium pyruvate to treat allergic rhinitis (AR). Alain Martin et al. aimed to ascertain the therapeutic value of 20 mM Sodium pyruvate nasal spray (N115) in AR patients. Nasal inflammation scores were compared to baseline controls or placebo controls after data from five human clinical trials were examined. Overall, 3 trials were open-label, while 2 used computer randomization to adequately blind both patients and doctors in the investigation.

All five therapeutic studies including individuals with AR that used Sodium pyruvate showed a substantial improvement in nasal inflammation scores. Sodium pyruvate prevents nitric oxide from interacting with hydrogen peroxide to produce harmful peroxynitrite, which is increased in AR that causes inflammation and congestion. Hence, intranasal use of Sodium pyruvate is beneficial to combat congestion and inflammation of the nasal airways.
