It is important to consider eating/dietary habits in pain management, ensuring that nutritional care is personalized to meet the patient's requirements.

A novel research conducted at a specialized pain rehabilitation centre published in Scientific Reports revealed prevalent unhealthy eating patterns among individuals suffering from chronic pain, including irregular meal timings and frequent consumption of junk food. The study researchers- Huan-Ji Dong et al. observed a correlation between these habits and a desire for healthier eating, particularly noticeable among younger patients grappling with obesity and emotional distress.

Healthcare providers frequently encounter pain patients presenting with poor nutritional statuses characterized by obesity or excess body weight, unhealthy eating habits, and poor dietary intake. The impact of such nutritional deficiencies on the onset, progression, and prognosis of chronic pain is considerable.

This study delved into the eating behaviours of 2152 patients (mean age of 46.1 (14.6) years; 24.8% were categorized as obese) within a specialized pain rehabilitation centre, drawing on data from the Swedish quality registry for pain rehabilitation spanning 2016 to 2021. Their dietary habits and desire to adopt a healthy lifestyle were noted down in a questionnaire.

Erratic mealtimes (27.2%), weekly fast-food consumption per week basis (20.3%) and routine consumption of sweets/confectionery (33.3%) were a part of suboptimal eating habits. About 20% (n = 426) of patients stated a yearning to eat healthier. Consistently consuming confectionery and fast food increased the likelihood of wanting to adopt healthier eating habits. Younger obese patients aged 18 to 29 years with more extended spatial pain were more likely to encourage a desire for healthier eating.
