What's new?

Probiotics ameliorate symptoms, quality of life, and are useful for the management allergic rhinitis patients.

A systematic review depicted that Daily Total Symptom Score, Total Ocular Symptom score, Total Nasal Symptom score, and quality of life significantly improved when allergic rhinitis patients used probiotics.

Haissan Iftikhar et al. aimed to combine most recent research with an overview of systematic reviews by gathering information on objective outcomes (T helper 1/T helper 2 [Th1/Th2] ratio, eosinophil, interferon-gamma, interleukin-10, total immunoglobulin E (IgE), and levels of antigen-specific IgE, and subjective outcomes (from Rhinitis Total Symptom Score, incidence of allergic rhinitis, Daily Total Symptom Score, Total Nasal Symptom Score, Total Ocular Symptom Score, and quality of life questionnaires).

The EBSCO Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, EBSCO CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and PubMed were searched for relevant literature. Assessing Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR-2) tool was used to conduct the qualitative evaluation. Overall, 419 titles were evaluated, and three systematic reviews fulfilled the eligibility requirements.

Probiotics have been demonstrated to enhance the Th1/Th2 ratio, daily total symptom scores, quality of life, and total nasal and ocular symptom scores in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. For rhinitis total symptom score, eosinophil, interferon-gamma, interleukin-10, total IgE, as well as antigen-specific IgE, there was no difference found. Hence, the use of probiotics is valuable to relieve allergic rhinitis symptoms.
