Use of probiotic formula plus antihistamine medicine can lessen
wheal size and occurence of attacks in children with urticaria.
According to a recent study published in Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology, the use of adjuvant therapy with a combination probiotic formula comprising of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria was safe and effective for chronic urticaria treatment in school going children at 4 weeks.
To understand the
efficacy of probiotic formula as adjuvant therapy, Xiao-Dong Bi and researchers enrolled 206 children diagnosed with
chronic urticaria. These children were divided into: Treatment group in which
104 patients were given desloratadine dry suspension and probiotic formula or;
Placebo group in which 102 patients were given only the dry suspension.
As found, the clinical symptom scores did
not vary considerably at the follow-up of 1 and 2 weeks. However, by the end of 4 weeks, the size of wheal and attack frequency
significantly decreased in the treatment group. A variation in the overall response rate (significant improvement and
complete response) amongst treatment group (80.8%) and placebo group (62.5%)
was observed.
