For functional improvement and
pain alleviation in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy, Platelet Rich
Plasma subacromial injection
can be used.
The administration of subacromial Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
injection can be effective for pain relief; improve functional outcomes and
sleep in patients with refractory rotator cuff tendinopathy, as learnt from
study in ‘Arthroscopy:
The Journal of Arthroscopic & Related Surgery‘.Furthermore, many athletes resumed sports at the same level as before.
Luciano A.Rossi et al. aimed to assess the efficacy of PRP
injections in terms of pain improvement; functional outcomes; sleep troubles;
resume sports activities prior to the injury.
Overall, 50 patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy
refractory to conservative therapy were treated with subacromial injection of
PRP. Mean follow-up was 1 year.
In case of functional outcomes, clinically notable
improvement surpassing the substantial clinical benefit for the American
Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score was observed in 80% patients (40 out
of 50 patients) and Constant scores in 86 % patients (43 out of 50 patients).
All the mobility parameters assessed improved
significantly after PRP injection. There was a significant improvement in
visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain assessment. Along with resolution of sleep
troubles in majority of patients, 84% resumed sports and 78% returned with the
same pace out of 32 patients who performed
sports prior to the injury. No complications reported.
