What's new?

Due to the neuromodulatory effects, the combination of omega-3 fatty and nano-curcumin effectively reduces the frequency, severity and duration of headaches in migraine patients.

New combination therapy of ω-3 fatty acids with nano-curcumin found to have a promising role in managing migraine, evident from findings of a clinical trial study led by a team of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

COX-2/ iNOS demonstrated a significant role in the neuroinflammatory pathogenesis of migraine. Both enzymes are closely associated and led to neurogenic pain and inflammation in the central nervous system. The natural components, omega-3 fatty acids and curcumin shows notable neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects which suppress the COX-2 and iNOS gene expression and their serum levels. Therefore, this analysis involved the evaluation of these two components in the reduction of migraine associated neuroinflammation and clinical symptoms.

A total of 74 participants were selected and provided with, nano-curcumin, ω-3 fatty acids, or a combination of them. The serum levels of COX-2/iNOS and their gene expression were evaluated at baseline and following the study using ELISA and PCR, respectively. The duration, frequency and severity of pain attacks were also assessed. The results found that both components can strengthen each other's impact in the downregulation of COX-2/iNOS mRNA and the reduction of serum levels. The  combination of nano-curcumin and ω-3 fatty acids also decreased the headaches severity, frequency and duration. These reflect that the combination can provide significant outcomes in migraine treatment.
