What's new?

A new risk scoring system to predict mortality in COVID-19 people can aid clinicians to offer proper therapy and strategy for each patient.

In people admitted and diagnosed with COVID-19, a new scoring system was developed for quick  and easy prediction of mortality using simple predictors, as per the findings of a study published in  The Yonsei Medical Journal. On the basis of simple demographic factors, clinical characteristics, and laboratory findings, the investigators aimed to build a new scoring system for inpatients infected with SARS-CoV-2. The data from the recruited participants were reviewed and analyzed.

In this retrospective cohort study, 1760 participants were randomly allocated to either development (1232 patients) or validation groups (528 patients). Each point scored for the selected risk factors aided to develop a novel scoring system utilizing Cox regression assessment. Utilizing the area under the curve, the accuracy of scoring system was determined in both groups.

The requirement for oxygen support during hospitalization, age ≥70 years, C-reactive protein levels >4 mg/dL, chronic kidney disease, infiltration on chest X-rays at the initial diagnosis, diabetes, and dementia were found to be the predictors for the scoring system in the development group.

The areas under the curve for the validation group and development groups were noted to be 0.898 and 0.914, respectively. As per the scoring system, the SARS-CoV-2 mortality for the very high-risk group (score ≥11) and the low-risk group (score 0-3) is shown in Table 1 below:

Prediction of the clinical outcomes for mortality and discharge might aid in assigning patients to the appropriate medical facilities and management, concluded the study authors.
