Mild to moderate knee OA can be effectively managed with Boswellia serrata extract, reducing pain and enhancing cartilage health.
Oral intake of standardized extract of Boswellia serrata gum resin is not only safe but also effective in relieving joint pain and improving knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), a 180-day randomized, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of the American Nutrition Association revealed.
The study by Brijesh Kumar et al. considered 80 adults with moderate KOA (Kellgren-Lawrence grade 2-3) and measured the effects of proprietary Boswellia extract 100 mg when used on a daily basis. Cartilage morphology, including increased cartilage volume and thickness, as well as joint space width significantly improved as shown on the magnetic resonance imaging scans. Additionally, pain and mobility, measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), visual analog scale (VAS), and Lequesne Functional Index showed notable reductions in symptoms.
Participants also demonstrated boosted physical performance, improvements observed in the 6-minute walk and stair climbing test. Inflammatory and cartilage degradation blood markers were suggestively reduced in those receiving the extract, further backening its function in improving joint health. Importantly, no adverse effects were observed, confirming the long-term safety of the extract.
