What's new?

Chronic NP patients may get pain relief, ease off disability, improve NME and ROM by using cervical mobilization along with physiotherapy.

Many of people struggle with problem of back pain. It can arise due to a number of degenerative disc diseases, neck injury or neck strain. According to doctor's it is a common complaint and can be improved by changing lifestyle which involving neck mobilization and routine physiotherapy.

Therefore, to determine the efficacy of mobilization  and routine  physiotherapy on neck pain, range of motion (ROM), neck disability and neck muscle endurance (NME) , a study has been conducted by Muhammad Nazim Farooq  and colleagues  in patients having mechanical neck pain (NP).

The study was held among 68 patients having mechanical NP. Further, the patients were assigned in groups of 34-34 patients by using a computer generated random sequence table. One group received the combined treatment of cervical mobilization with routine physiotherapy and other received only routine physiotherapy. The baseline values for neck pain, ROM, neck disability and NME were noted before the treatment. The values were recorded by using visual analogue scale (VAS), universal goniometer, neck disability index (NDI) and neck flexor muscle endurance tests. After noting down the baseline values, every patient obtained 10 treatment sessions for 4 weeks. At the end of four weeks, all the outcomes were recorded again.

The pre to post treatment difference for all outcomes in both the groups were significantly explained by an A paired t-test (p ≤ 0.001). The independent t-test conducted in both groups revealed a statistically significant differences for pain, ROM, disability and NME. All the differences were in favor of multi-modal mobilization group with the group difference of 1.57 cm for VAS, 6.06–8.24° for universal goniometer, 11.74 points for NDI and 18.45 s for NME tests.

Thence, the whole study suggests that the combination of combined treatment of cervical mobilization with routine physiotherapy (multi-modal mobilization) is more effective in the mechanical NP treatment as compared to routine physiotherapy alone.
