Using a tape containing 60% Lidocaine for 3 min prior to infiltration anesthesia can effectively and safely relieve pain during mucosal puncture and anesthetic injection, thereby reducing patient stress during dental treatment.

The application of a tape containing 60% Lidocaine before infiltration anesthesia can significantly minimize patient distress, offering a promising solution for improving the overall dental experience, as deciphered from a recent preliminary controlled trial. Recognizing the need for improved pain management methods, researchers focused on exploring the efficacy and safety of Lidocaine tape, known for its potent topical anesthetic effect.

The study involved 14 healthy volunteers (age ≥18 and <60 years), who had Lidocaine tape applied to their oral mucosa. The key endpoint was to evaluate the reduction of pain during needle insertion, measured by visual analog scale (VAS) scores. Secondary objectives involved assessing pain relief during anesthetic injection using VAS scores, as well as examining pain suppression during both needle insertion and anesthetic injection using verbal rating scale (VRS) scores.

Safety assessments included examining adverse effects such as mucositis and pain on the oral mucosa following the removal of Lidocaine tape. These assessments were conducted in accordance with the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, version 5.0, considering the condition of the mucosa at the application site. The results were striking. Lidocaine tape application led to a remarkable drop in pain intensity during both mucosal puncture and local anesthetic injection compared to non-application.

Statistical analysis revealed a notable reduction in VAS scores, demonstrating the effectiveness of Lidocaine tape in ameliorating discomfort during dental procedures. Crucially, the study also highlighted the safety of Lidocaine tape application. Using standardized criteria for adverse event evaluation, no negative outcomes attributable to the Lidocaine tape were witnessed among the enrolled subjects.  In conclusion, pre-treating with a Lidocaine tape for 3 minutes before anesthesia considerably diminishes pain during dental procedures, easing patient stress.

This underscores the potential of Lidocaine tape as a safe and effective tool for enhancing patient comfort during dental treatments. These findings mark an impressive advancement in dental care, offering hope for a more comfortable and stress-free experience for those undergoing various dental procedures. As further research and clinical trials unfold, Lidocaine tape stands poised to revolutionize pain management in dentistry, ushering in a novel era of patient-centered care.
