What's new?

Lemon ginger candy can be utilized as a herbal ingredient to minimize nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

In the first trimester pregnant females who experienced emesis complaints, consuming 5 grains of lemon ginger candy per day considerably minimized the intensity of nausea and vomiting compared to the control group, as deciphered from a recent quasi-experimental study. Researchers sought to explore the efficacy of lemon ginger candy during pregnancy. The study employed a pre and post-test design with a control group strategy, and the sample consisted of 30 pregnant women in the first trimester who experienced nausea and vomiting.

For selecting volunteers, purposive sampling techniques were utilized. Pre-research activities encompassed product trials, organoleptic tests, and candy content tests to ascertain the quality and composition of the lemon ginger candy. Subjects in the intervention group consumed five grains of lemon ginger candy per day, with each candy weighing about one gram. Ten grams of the candy contained 3 grams of ginger, 1.6 mg of Vitamin C, and 31.2 calories.

Data collection involved the use of the Pregnancy Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUEQ questionnaire) to assess the intensity of nausea and vomiting in both the intervention and control groups. The results of the study were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test, which showed a profound difference between the groups. Substantial differences in the intensity of nausea and vomiting were observed from days 6 and 7 of the treatment.

Based on these findings, it can be concluded that lemon ginger candy consumption can effectively reduce nausea and vomiting in pregnant women during the first trimester. The inclusion of ginger in the candy proved beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of emesis. This natural remedy could be considered a herbal option for pregnant females who experience nausea and vomiting, providing them with a potential alternative to conventional antiemetic medications. This study contributes valuable insights into the use of natural remedies to address common discomforts experienced during pregnancy.
