What's new?

A combination of laserpuncture and vitamin B12 is effective in alleviating the painful symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. This treatment approach demonstrates significant and expedited reduction in pain symptoms.

According to the findings of a randomized clinical trial, laserpuncture, when complemented by vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) supplementation, demonstrated promising results as a more efficient therapeutic approach for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain management in adults. Investigators aimed to assess the efficacy of low-power laser therapy, specifically laserpuncture, in managing pain among patients diagnosed with TMD. The investigation further explored the potential benefits of combining laserpuncture with vitamin B12  in this treatment approach.

To evaluate the location of orofacial pain and determine the blood vitamin B12 levels, volunteers were given a questionnaire. The study involved 45 adult patients (above 18 years of age) of various genders and races with TMD, with pain being their primary complaint. The participants were randomly divided into three groups: Group 1 received placebo laserpuncture and placebo vitamin B12, Group 2 received effective laserpuncture and placebo vitamin B12, and Group 3 was given effective laserpuncture and effective vitamin B12.

Pain levels were examined utilizing a visual analogue scale (VAS) prior to and post-laser therapy during each session. Laserpuncture was performed on specific points of Traditional Chinese Medicine known to be effective in treating TMD, using a laser device with an infrared wavelength and energy output of 3J. The treatment consisted of a total of 8 sessions, with two sessions conducted per week over a span of four weeks. Both Group 2 and Group 3 exhibited betterment in their pain symptoms following the intervention. Notably, patients in Group 3 demonstrated significant enhancement as early as the fourth session, as depicted in Figure 1.

Thus, the combination of laserpuncture and vitamin B12 supplementation enhances the efficacy of TMD treatment.
