What's new?

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have a higher susceptibility to allergic rhinitis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients experienced an elevated likelihood of development of allergic rhinitis, as indicated by findings from a systematic review and meta-analysis. Researchers specifically sought to assess the risk of allergic rhinitis in individuals diagnosed with IBD. Various databases accessible in both Chinese and English, such as PubMed, BioRXiv, METSTR, WanFang, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), MedRxiv, Web of Science, R, and were explored.

The study involved the examination of results presented at conferences related to allergy, rhinology, thoracic, and gastrointestinal. As found, 2 investigators independently collected data, reviewed literature, and assessed the risk of bias on the basis of predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis was carried out utilizing RevMan 5.4, and eligible study designs included cohort and case-control studies for the research. The meta-analysis incorporated ten case-control studies and one cohort study. The experimental group comprised 65,687 individuals diagnosed with IBD, among whom 5838 were identified with allergic rhinitis.

The control group included 345,176 volunteers without IBD, with 24,625 cases of allergic rhinitis. The results indicated that individuals with IBD faced an elevated risk of development of allergic rhinitis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.48, Z = 2.78) compared to those without IBD. Hence, the risk of allergic rhinitis is higher in IBD-affected patients. To deepen the understanding of the relationship between allergic rhinitis and IBD, additional investigation is warranted to uncover the underlying mechanisms.
