Ilizarov fixation and internal fixation for ankle fusion proven to be effective in treating ankle arthritis Ilizarov fixation and internal fixation for ankle fusion proven to be effective in treating ankle arthritis

What's new?

Ankle fusion outcomes after fixation with Ilizarov apparatus was better than after internal stabilization, however the levels of physical activity were same after both procedures.

According to a recent study, the ankle arthritis can be controlled via ankle fusion with internal and Ilizarov fixation. The osteoarthritis of the ankle is a significant issue, which causes pain and functional disability. However, what effects the ankle fusion puts on a player's physical and sports activity levels is still unknown.

Therefore, Piotr Morasiewicz and colleagues conducted an analysis at the orthopedic clinic of Wroclaw Medical University, Poland to determine ankle fusion effects. A total of 47 patients were enrolled and categorized into two groups; the Ilizarov external fixation stabilization and internal stabilization with screws. The first group involved 21 and the second group comprised 26 patients. The GRIMBY scale, VAS (visual analogue scale) ACTIVITY scale, LOWER LIMB Activity scale, FAAM (foot and ankle ability measure) SPORT scale and UCLA (University of California Los Angeles) activity scale was used to assess physical and sports activity among the patients of both treatment groups.

The GRIMBY and LOWER LIMB Activity scale exhibited no significant differences before and after the surgery between both group one and two. The FAAM SPORT scale, UCLA, VAS activity scale mean scores noticed higher in-group one as compared to group two after the treatment. The outcomes reflect that the patients treated with Ilizarov fixation exhibited better VAS, UCLA and FAAM sport scales scores after the operation. Both groups showed satisfactory physical and sports activity and improvement in outcomes after the procedures.
