What's new?

Applying Ibuprofen/Arginine gel prior to in-office bleaching can help minimize the risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity associated with the procedure.

In a randomized, triple-blind controlled trial, the use of the desensitizing gel (Ibuprofen plus Arginine) adequately diminished the risk and severity of tooth sensitivity while maintaining the bleaching efficiency without any compromise. Researchers sought to determine the usefulness of using a desensitizing gel before dental bleaching in alleviating tooth sensitivity.

The trial compared the incidence and severity of tooth sensitivity and the whitening results between participants who used the experimental gel and those who used a placebo. In total, 62 volunteers having upper canine shades A2 or darker were randomized to either the Ibuprofen-Arginine desensitizing arm or the placebo arm. The desensitizing gel was administered for 15 minutes prior to conducting in-office bleaching with a 35% hydrogen peroxide gel for 50 minutes, divided into 2 sessions.

Tooth sensitivity was investigated utilizing visual and numeric rating scales. Furthermore, the color change was estimated before and one month after bleaching with the aid of various assessment tools. Statistical analysis was executed to compare the outcomes between the two groups. Participants using the desensitizing gel had considerably lower odds of experiencing tooth sensitivity as opposed to those using the placebo (odds ratio: 0.14 [95% CI 0.02 to 0.6]).

Additionally, the intensity of tooth sensitivity was lower in the experimental group up to 48 hours after bleaching. Both groups displayed efficient and comparable whitening results. Hence, topical use of Ibuprofen in combination with Arginine can effectively ameliorate the risk and severity of tooth sensitivity, while retaining the effectiveness of the bleaching procedure.
