What's new?

For alleviating pain in people with temporomandibular joint internal derangement, Hyaluronic acid + platelet-rich plasma outperformed Hyaluronic acid + corticosteroid.

A comparative randomized study depicted that the combination of Hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) significantly relieved pain when compared to Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroid to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement with reduction.

Researchers compared the outcomes of various intra-articular injections utilizing a combination of Hyaluronic acid and PRP vs. Hyaluronic acid plus corticosteroid. Overall, 60 volunteers were randomized into 2 equal groups. Hyaluronic acid and PRP were injected into people in group I, whereas Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroid were administered to group II patients. The joint sound, lateral movement, maximum inter-incisal opening, and pain severity (as per the visual analogue scale [VAS]) were assessed prior to the surgery as well as one week, one month, and six months following surgery.

Improvements in maximum inter-incisal opening and lateral movements were seen in both groups, and there was no discernible difference between the examined groups in the proportion of patients experiencing clicking sounds during the course of the follow-up periods. However, in terms of pain, those who received Hyaluronic acid and PRP injections had the highest improvements post-six months, whereas those who received Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroids got the best results at the end of the first week.

In the management of internal TMJ derangement, Hyaluronic acid together with PRP was more efficient than Hyaluronic acid plus corticosteroids, and the level of pain was reported to be reduced at the long-term follow-up.
