Hyaluronic acid in wisdom tooth extraction sockets promotes faster healing

What's new?

Intra-socket application of hyaluronic acid after wisdom tooth extraction significantly reduces postoperative pain and swelling, enhancing patient recovery.

In a recent research involving 40 healthy adults scheduled for the extraction of bilateral impacted mandibular third molars, applying hyaluronic acid (HA) directly into the socket after impacted mandibular third molar surgery notably sped up healing and diminished postoperative pain and swelling.

Extraction of mandibular third molars is a common oral surgery procedure that often comes with complications, such as sensory nerve damage, swelling, and restricted jaw movement (trismus).

In this prospective, randomized controlled study by Adel Alenazi et al., the impact of HA on recovery after molar extraction was evaluated. Patients with right-side extractions were assigned to the HA group, while those undergoing left-side extractions formed the control group.

The surgeries were conducted at staggered times to ensure accurate measurement of postoperative variables, including pain, swelling, and mouth opening. Results indicated that patients receiving HA reported lower pain levels at all measured intervals, according to the visual analog scale (VAS). Although postoperative swelling peaked within the first 12 to 48 hours, it resolved by the fifth to seventh day. Importantly, there was no significant difference in the range of mouth opening before and after surgery between the two groups.
