High body roundness index boosts gallstone risk by over 200%!

What's new?

Body roundness index instead of BMI can be used for more accurate gallstone risk assessment, as it provides clearer risk differentiation.

While obesity has long been linked to gallstones, traditional measures like BMI might not capture the full picture. To fill this gap, a recent study published in ‘BMC Gastroenterology’ explored whether body roundness index (BRI) is a better predictor of gallstone risk than body mass index (BMI).

Changlong Wei and Gongyin Zhang analyzed data from 5,297 people in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study 2017-2020. The connection between BRI and the development of gallstones was determined using logistic regression, subgroup analyses, and advanced methods.

Out of the 5297 participants involved, 575 had gallstones. The study found a marked positive link between BRI and gallstone risk. Compared to the lowest quartile, those in the highest BRI quartile were 204% more prone to the risk of gallstones or cholelithiasis. BRI also proved to be a better predictor of gallstones than BMI, with an Area under the ROC Curve (AUC) of 0.667 versus 0.634.

Monitoring and managing the BRI could be key to preventing gallstones and improving overall health, as suggested by the study researchers.
