The bioelectric toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste offers effective, at-home relief for sensitive teeth and improved plaque removal without side effects.

As per a study issued in the “Bioengineering” journal, a combination of bioelectric toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste may be an effective solution for patients struggling with tooth sensitivity and pain.

Hyun-Kyung Kang and researchers assessed the bioelectric toothbrush’s usefulness in relieving dentin hypersensitivity by using electrostatic forces to remove biofilm in their recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The patients at a preventive dental clinic between March and October 2023 were split into two groups: one using a bioelectric toothbrush (number of patients = 25) and the other using a traditional toothbrush (number of patients = 18).

Surveys, the number of hypersensitive teeth, O’Leary plaque index, visual analogue scale (VAS), and Schiff Cold Air Sensitivity Scale (SCASS) were measured. Pairing fluoride toothpaste with a bioelectric toothbrush significantly reduced VAS and SCASS scores for sensitivity symptoms, decreased the number of hypersensitive teeth, and lowered plaque levels (O’Leary index). The bioelectric toothbrush also proved effective in removing plaque.

Dental clinics should actively advocate bioelectric toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste for those experiencing hyperesthesia and pain. Additionally, these products can be advised as preventive oral care options for patients at risk of developing hyperesthesia.
