Etoricoxib is effective for managing post-extraction pain, enhancing patient comfort, patient satisfaction and quicker recovery times.
New research published in the journal ‘Cureus’ investigated preemptive analgesia, where analgesic agents are used before a painful stimulus to avert central sensitization and prolong the duration of analgesia.
This study by Roohika Sharma and the team was a double-blinded, prospective, observational study involving 50 participants per group. A tablet of Etoricoxib 90 mg was given 30 minutes before mandibular third molar extraction compared to placebo. Pain levels were assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) at 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours’ post-procedure.
Immediately post-procedure in the first hour, the mean VAS score was remarkably lower in the intervention group (3.14) than in the control group (6.40). At 6 hours, scores were 3.82 (study) versus 7.16 (control). By 12 hours, scores were 4.64 (analysis) and 6.14 (control). At 24 hours, scores were 3.80 (study) versus 5.60 (control).
Administration of Etoricoxib 90 mg before extraction markedly diminishes post-operative pain relative to placebo, demonstrating its peak effect at 6 hours and prolonged relief up to 24 hours.
