What's new?

In people suffering from acute gastritis, atropine combined with omeprazole was found to effectively improve the clinical symptoms linked with acute gastritis.

For treatment of acute gastritis, the combination of omeprazole and atropine showed a highly effective rate with fewer adverse reactions than the combination of anisodamine and omeprazole, as per a systematic review and meta-analysis carried out by Xian Lin et al.

In this, the efficacy and safety of atropine + omeprazole vs. anisodamine + omeprazole were explored for the management of acute gastritis. Electronic databases such as Embase, PubMed, Wanfang database, Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched for the relevant articles on the treatment of acute gastritis.

A meta-analysis was carried out following the literature selection as per the inclusion criteria. The major outcomes ascertained were therapeutic efficiency and the occurrence of noxious reactions. Assessment of standardized mean differences, odds ratios, and 95% confidence intervals of the two therapeutic regimens was done. Overall, 11 articles with 1,053 participants were analyzed.

Atropine + omeprazole led to remarkable improvements in the clinical outcomes of people having acute gastritis in comparison with anisodamine + omeprazole (the control group). The effective rate of atropine + omeprazole therapy was 1.21 times greater than the rate reported for the control group. Compared to the anisodamine + omeprazole group, the occurrence of noxious reactions was 0.41 times greater in the atropine + omeprazole group.

The total therapeutic time, duration of abdominal pain, duration of nausea  and vomiting, and duration of diarrhea were reduced by 0.57 days, 2.82 days, 2.68 days and 1.99 days respectively in the atropine + omeprazole group in comparison with the control group. The findings of this assessment favor the implementation of atropine + omeprazole in clinical practice to treat people suffering from acute gastritis.
