What's new?

The use of ceramide moisturizing cream and cleanser can relieve the symptoms of eczema over four weeks.

The use of ceramide-based moisturizing cream and cleanser can safely reinstate the skin permeability and improve the signs and symptoms of eczema (or atopic dermatitis) in adults, the results of a randomized trial issued in the journal Dermatologic Therapy concluded.

A decline in levels of ceramides in the stratum corneum may lead to compromised skin barrier function in the case of eczema.

This study by Fabrizio Spada et al. aimed to determine if a ceramide, lipid-based moisturizing cream and cleanser could improve eczema symptoms. Overall, 100 participants were randomly allocated to receive either the ceramide cream and ceramide cleanser (n=50) or placebo cream and placebo (n=50). The study evaluations were done at the starting and every 7 days over a period of 4 weeks.

Comparison of therapeutic effects on symptom severity as assessed by Eczema area and severity index (EASI) score at day 28 compared to baseline was the major endpoint. The EASI score reduced notably in both groups in comparison with baseline. On the other hand, this reduction was not significant on day 28. Patients in the active group had significantly improved transepidermal water loss and skin hydration over time as opposed to the placebo group.

Mometasone furoate usage as rescue medication did not vary amongst the groups. Both the study groups showed improved Dermatology life quality index scores. More patients in the active group had greater relief of itch, dry skin, thus leading to soft and smooth skin. No severe adverse events were reported.

Thus, a moisturizing cream and cleanser containing ceramides and other lipids in the appropriate physiological ratio effectively and safely improve the symptoms and signs of moderate eczema.
