What's new?

In elderly patients with xerosis, the use of Ceramide-containing cream and cleanser was associated with improvement in skin dryness, quality of life, and overall satisfaction.

A study illustrated that skin dryness, quality of life metrics, and overall satisfaction were improved by an easy-to-use, Ceramide-containing skincare routine in people suffering from xerosis. In this study, Federica Filippi et al. sought to determine the effects of a moisturising cleanser and body cream containing ceramides on the skin quality and the patient's quality of life.

Thirty men and women (≥70 years of age) who had signs of xerosis or desquamation on their body, as well as those who had a systemic illness or were using a chronic medication known to cause the side effect of xerosis were recruited. The test cream was used twice daily, while the test cleanser was used at least once a day. Clinical scoring and patient self-evaluation of quality of life (4-point scale), and patient self-evaluation of dryness (5-point scale) were done at baseline and after 28 days (D28).

Overall,  ≥90% of patients had impacted legs and feet when they first showed signs of xerosis and discomfort because of dryness. Desquamation/roughness (-82%), discomfort because of dryness (-93%), and fissures (-97%) had lower mean clinical severity scores at D28. For all metrics, patient self-evaluation scores showed a comparable improvement. Patient quality of life remarkably improved.

Notably, ≥90% did not feel that their illness interferes with their everyday tasks or leisure/social activities, and 77% no longer felt humiliated about their condition. Hence, Ceramide-containing skincare regimen yields beneficial outcomes in xerosis-affected people. The overall satisfaction of elderly patients with the outcomes was high.
