What's new?

In people with temporomandibular disorders and bruxism, the use of botulinum toxin-A injections into facial muscles is safe and effective.

In a systematic review, the administration of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) infiltrations demonstrated the ability to decrease the frequency of bruxism episodes, reduce masticatory force, and alleviate associated pain levels in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and bruxism. These positive outcomes directly contributed to an enhanced quality of life for the affected patients. Researchers aimed to assess the effectiveness of BTX-A compared to conventional methods in treating TMD and bruxism.

Electronic databases including LILACS, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and PubMed were systematically searched. The selected studies involved subjects aged > 18 years who had TMD and/or bruxism. The studies evaluated the effects of BTX-A injections on the temporal and/or masseter muscles, with control groups receiving either saline injections (placebo) or conventional intervention methods for bruxism like cognitive behavioral therapy, occlusal splints, or other medications.

Out of the 62 articles obtained, 6 articles were incorporated. These studies indicated that BTX-A injections have the potential to alleviate pain levels, decrease the frequency of bruxism episodes, and reduce the maximum occlusal force associated with this condition. Furthermore, it was found that BTX-A exhibits higher effectiveness in treating bruxism in comparison with control groups treated with either placebo or conventional methods for bruxism management.

The use of BTX-A infiltrations was a favorable treatment option for individuals diagnosed with bruxism, particularly those with severe cases. This approach has been proven to be both safe and effective, making it a suitable choice for regular implementation in clinical practice.
