Bariatric surgery boosts fertility outcomes in women

What's new?

Bariatric surgery promotes weight loss, restores ovulatory function and menstrual regularity, enhances spontaneous conception, reduces miscarriage risk, and boosts fertility in women of reproductive age.

The rising prevalence of obesity has led to infertility, particularly in women. In a recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in the "Journal of Clinical Medicine", bariatric surgery showed promise in improving fertility by addressing obesity-related reproductive challenges. Investigators analyzed studies from databases like PubMed, Web Science and Medline.

Researchers scrutinized the impact of bariatric surgery on fertility outcomes, including menstrual irregularities, miscarriage rates, and infertility. As found, bariatric surgery markedly reduced irregular menstrual cycles (Risk ratios [RR] 0.22), infertility rates (RR 0.55), and miscarriage rates (RR 0.51). While it also decreased the risk of congenital malformations, the effect was not statistically significant (RR 0.39). Overall, bariatric surgery was useful in improving infertility (RR 0.54).

To sum up, bariatric surgery aids infertile women of reproductive age in weight loss, leading to improved ovulation, more regular menstrual cycles, and higher chances of spontaneous conception. The study also found that spontaneous conception is more likely after bariatric surgery due to reduced miscarriage rates, enhanced fertility, fewer congenital issues, and the normalization of menstrual cycles.

These findings emphasize the importance of comprehensive preconception care and counseling for women undergoing weight loss surgery. Future research should aim to investigate specific bariatric procedures to identify the most beneficial strategy for improving pregnancy rates.
