For the management of chronic urticaria, autologous serum therapy is superior to antihistamine.
Autologous serum therapy is more efficient than antihistamine in managing chronic urticaria, according to a randomized controlled clinical study. In order to treat chronic urticaria, researchers compared the effectiveness of intramuscular platelet rich plasma with an oral antihistamine.
Overall, 100 subjects were incorporated and randomly allocated to group A (n=50) and group B (n=50). Patients in group A received 9 intramuscular autologous serum injections, whereas subjects in group B were administered oral antihistamines routinely. Both treatment options' efficacy was evaluated using the Urticaria Activity Score-7 (UAS-7) scale.
The UAS-7 in the autologous serum group and the antihistamine group at baseline, 4th week, 9th week, and 12th week is depicted in Table 1:
Thus, autologous serum therapy is more effective as compared to an antihistamine to relieve chronic urticaria.
